Shortly after 1:00 pm on Monday, 9-1-1 dispatchers fielded a call reporting an incident near the 1000-block of Kendall Street in Douglas County. According to witnesses, two men attempting to traverse the South Umpqua River on foot lost their footing and were submerged in the water, failing to resurface.
Responding to the emergency, a collaborative effort unfolded with teams from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, Douglas County Fire District #2, Roseburg Police Department, Roseburg Fire Department, and Umpqua Valley Ambulance converging at the scene to initiate search and rescue operations.
Tragically, one of the men was discovered lifeless on the riverbank. Authorities are withholding his identity pending notification of next of kin, respecting the grieving process for the family.
Despite exhaustive efforts, divers from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office were unable to locate the second victim, described as a male, after two days of searching. The quest to recover the missing individual is ongoing, with rescue teams continuing in their endeavors.
At this time, no additional information was released by authorities.
