Medford Police Department Hosts Latino Citizen’s Academy

The Medford Police Department (MPD) has announced the successful hosting of a three-week Latino Citizen’s Academy, that concluded in September. Organizers remark this initiative was made possible with the support and dedication of Cultural Outreach Coordinator, Lilia Caballero.

The academy featured a series of informative and interactive classes taught by MPD’s Spanish-speaking officers and employees. These classes covered a wide range of topics, including domestic violence, traffic stops, code enforcement issues, fraud prevention, drug awareness, and an insightful glimpse into the workings of the K9 Program. Each session was attended by approximately 22 participants.

“Providing information and connecting with our Latino community members is an important piece of our department’s mission,” emphasized Police Lieutenant Rebecca Pietila, highlighting the significance of this program in bridging the gap between law enforcement and the community it serves.

The MPD initiated the Latino Citizen’s Academy back in 2016, with the intention of establishing a stronger and more inclusive community. Unfortunately, the COVID-19 pandemic put a temporary halt to these in-person events. However, MPD was determined to continue its mission, and after careful consideration, decided to revisit and expand the program as part of its strategic plan.

Looking forward, the MPD is looks to expanding its engagement efforts in the Latino community. Plans are already in motion to host another Latino Citizen’s Academy in 2024, this time extending it to four weeks. The upcoming program promises to cover a variety of new and relevant information, further strengthening the bond between the department and the community it serves.
