Two-Vehicle Crash Claims Life of Southern Oregon Resident

On Wednesday, September 20, 2023, on Highway 97 near milepost 289, a two-vehicle collision claimed the life of Marci Ann Maples (51), a resident of Klamath Falls.

The incident occurred at approximately 7:26 A.M. when Marci Ann Maples, driving a black Jeep Cherokee, attempted to make a left turn onto Highway 97 from Keno Worden Road. The Jeep entered the path of a southbound Dodge Ram 1500, operated by Charles Lavern Owens (55) of Los Angeles, California.

Despite Owens’ efforts to avoid the collision, the Dodge Ram struck the driver’s side door of the Jeep Cherokee, resulting in the impact. Emergency services, including the Oregon State Police (OSP), responded to the scene.

Marci Ann Maples, the operator of the Jeep, sustained critical injuries and was life-flighted to Sky Lakes Medical Center. Regrettably, she was pronounced deceased at the hospital, according to authorities.

Charles Lavern Owens, the driver of the Dodge Ram, was transported to Sky Lakes Medical Center via ambulance. OSP reports he suffered minor injuries and is expected to recover.

The aftermath of the collision saw Highway 97 impacted for a period of 2 hours as investigators from the Oregon State Police combed the scene for evidence and details to shed light on the incident.

The Oregon State Police were supported in their efforts by the Keno Fire department and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT).
