One Dead After I5 Crash in Josephine County

On Sunday, September 17, 2023, at approximately 5:40 P.M., tragedy struck on Interstate 5 near milepost 80 in Josephine County. The Oregon State Police (OSP) responded to a single-vehicle motorcycle crash that claimed the life of Caseton Paul Burruss, a 50-year-old resident of Eugene.

Preliminary investigations by OSP revealed that Burruss had been riding a Harley Davidson motorcycle in the northbound slow lane when the accident occurred. The motorcycle veered off the roadway and ultimately overturned, leading to Burruss being thrown from his bike upon impact. Burruss was pronounced deceased at the scene, by emergency personnel.

The accident did not disrupt traffic on the busy interstate, as OSP managed the situation without any significant impact on highway operations. This swift response was aided by the collaborative efforts of various emergency response teams. OSP received vital assistance from Azalea Fire, Glendale Fire, and the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT), showcasing the spirit of cooperation and dedication within Oregon’s emergency services.

As the investigation into the circumstances of this tragic accident continues, authorities emphasize the need for all motorists, including motorcycle riders, to exercise caution and adhere to traffic regulations, especially on highways as heavily traversed as Interstate 5.
