Coos County Dispatch received a distressing 911 call on July 2nd, 2023, around 2:00 pm, reporting an individual unconscious and not breathing following a motorcycle accident in the Oregon Dunes. Responding swiftly, Sergeant M. Smith and Deputies Smith and Kent from the Coos County Sheriff’s Office immediately rushed to the scene.
Despite the coordinated efforts of the Coos County Sheriff’s Office, Bay Cities Ambulance, and the Hauser Fire Department, authorities report the passing of Steven Hagenbuch (29) from Grants Pass. Despite attempts to save his life, Steven succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
A comprehensive investigation into the incident revealed several contributing factors to this tragic accident. High winds, the ever-changing landscape of the Oregon Dunes, and the blinding glare from the sun were determined to have played a role in this fatal incident.
