Definition of “Prohibited Camping” in Medford Changes

During the May 4 City Council meeting, Council members approved the code change to Prohibited Camping (Medford Municipal Code 5.257).

An established camping site is now defined as, “A campsite that has been in its current location for at least five days. If law enforcement officials do not have evidence about the age of a campsite, law enforcement officials should presume it is an established camping site.”

State law requires that 72-hours notice be given prior to removing an illegal camping site, if that camping site is established.

Officials say that adopting this local definition of established camping site will now facilitate more timely enforcement throughout the City and address the challenge of repeat offenders immediately relocating illegal tents in areas that have been noticed and cleaned.
