City of Medford Considering “Established Camping Site” Definition

On Thursday, May 4, the Medford City Council will consider a code change that would provide a local definition of “established camping site” pertaining to Prohibited Camping (Medford Municipal Code 5.257).

State law requires that 72-hours notice be given prior to removing an illegal camping site, if that camping site is established. Adopting a local definition of established camping site would facilitate timely enforcement throughout the City and address the challenge of repeat offenders immediately relocating illegal tents in areas that have been noticed and cleaned.

Proposed Established Camping Site definition: A campsite that has been in its current location for at least five days. If law enforcement officials do not have evidence about the age of a campsite, law enforcement officials should presume it is an established camping site.

The proposed code change does not alter the time-place-manner regulations that City Council adopted in 2021 but defines a currently undefined term for clarification in enforcement.

The Council Meeting will begin at 6 p.m. and will be streamed live. Click here to view the upcoming meeting agenda.
