The Jackson County District Attorney’s Office announced yesterday that Arthur Jacob Wood, pled guilty to Assault in the Second Degree and was sentenced to five years in the Oregon Department of Corrections.
The charge arose from an assault that occurred on the Greenway in Medford on October 8, 2022. On that day, at approximately 10:03AM, officers from the Medford Police Department responded to a report that a male, later identified as Levi Morgan, was suffering from a head injury from an apparent assault.
Mr. Morgan was transported to Rogue Regional Medical Center where he was determined to be suffering from multiple skull fractures and a brain bleed.
The ensuing investigation revealed that Mr. Wood had assaulted Mr. Morgan with a hammer. The motive for the assault was that Mr. Wood had been upset with Mr. Morgan over a recent repair that Mr. Morgan had completed on his bike.
The two had previously become acquainted with one another while being homeless and staying at the Urban Campground in Medford. Mr. Morgan reported that he was blindsided and attacked on the Greenway by Mr. Wood, who initially knocked him to the ground and kicked him several times.
When Mr. Morgan attempted to grab a hammer from his tools to defend himself from the attack, Mr. Wood grabbed it instead and began striking him in the head with it, causing his head injuries. The hammer used by Mr. Wood to commit the assault was located in the creek nearby where the assault occurred.
This prosecution was handled by Deputy District Attorney Patrick P. Green
