At approximately 12:50p today, ECSO received a number of calls about a grass fire just off the southbound I5 in central Ashland.
Upon arrival, firefighters stated they had a working fire of approximately 1/4 acre burning in heavy brush. Structural protection units set up as a precaution for nearby neighborhoods.
Ashland Fire Rescue (AFR), Jackson County Fire District 5 (JCFD5), Oregon Department of Forestry (ODF), and Oregon State Police (OSP) all responded to the scene.
Law enforcement is searching for a male with long hair that witnesses say was seen quickly walking away from the fire as it started.
As of 1:04p, there are no evacuations in place.
1:13p UPDATE: Forward movement of the fire has been stopped and fire has been knocked down. Several units will remain on scene for mop up efforts. No current threat to surrounding structures or vegetation.
FINAL UPDATE: All units have cleared. The fire was last estimated to have burnt 1/2 of an acre. The incident remains under investigation.
