Grants Pass Woman Steals Vehicle with Young Children Inside

On July 9, 2022, at approximately 2:53pm, Officers from the Grants Pass Police Department responded to the area of 6th and I Street after a citizen called and reported a hit and run. Dispatch learned the suspect vehicle had been stolen from the 300 block of SW K Street.

Inside the car, when it was stolen, were the victim’s two young children.  A family member was following the stolen vehicle through town when the suspect, later identified as Brittany Alire, struck an uninvolved vehicle at SW 6th and SW I Street before continuing to flee in the stolen car.  The motorists in the collision were not injured.  The family member continued to follow the stolen car in her own car.

Fearing for the safety of the children, the family member blocked the stolen car in front of Fire Mountain Gems on NE F Street. Alire stopped the car in the middle of the roadway and fled on foot. The young children were left unsupervised in the car after she fled.

Another citizen, observing the incident, followed Alire into a nearby clothing store.  Alire was taken into custody by arriving police officers without further incident.

The stolen vehicle and the two minor children were turned over to the mother at the scene. Fortunately, the children were not injured.

Alire was turned over to detectives with the Grants Pass Police Department and was later lodged in the Josephine County Jail.

The Grants Pass Police Department thanks those who assisted with preventing Alire from continuing to drive in a reckless manner and ensuring the children were kept safe from danger. GPPD also mentioned their appreciation for the citizens who helped to follow Alire and prevent her from fleeing further.

Anyone with information about the case or who may have witnessed any of the incidents is asked to call the Grants Pass Police Department at 541-450-6260.
