ODF’s Medford unit is conducting a live burn training north of Central Point along Truax and Newland roads today.

Authorities say smoke may be seen from this area both today and Friday, and to be aware this is a two-day training exercise.
Roughly 50 firefighters are on scene to participate in today’s training. Today, 12 acres will be burned, with an additional 12 burned tomorrow in the same area.
ODF says experienced firefighters are lighting small areas of grass for new firefighters to take the information they’ve been learning in the past couple of weeks and put it to the test in a controlled environment.

This also allows ODF’s new dispatchers a chance to see what happens on a fire; they’ll be dispatching in a vehicle on scene to observe firefighters in action.
