UPDATE from JCSO: “We are sad to inform that the incident has led to the death of the child. Our condolences go out to the family. Please respect their privacy in this time of grieving.”
At approximately 3:26p, emergency crews were dispatched to the Little Butte Creek area off Brownsboro Highway in Eagle Point. The initial callout was for a water rescue.
Jackson County Sheriffs (JCSO) personnel were first on scene, as Jackson County Fire District 3 (FD3) units and one Mercy Flights ground ambulance were heading to the scene.
A child had frantically contacted a nearby adult after their companion had gone into the Creek and not surfaced yet. The adult called 911 as nearby residents began to help search the banks of the Creek for the missing child. The child was believed to be just 7-years old, according to scanner traffic.
Multiple JCSO units set up down the waterway and at downtown Eagle Point bridges in hopes of seeing the child surface. Once FD3 units got on scene, they called in a dive team thinking the child was under the waters of a nearby dam on the Creek.
As more personnel arrived, a nearby Eagle Point resident received permission from JCSO to fly a drone in hopes of spotting the missing child. It is believed the child’s father was also on scene assisting in the search.
At approximately 4:23p, a JCSO deputy was dispatched to the 400 block of N. Royal Ave as residents believed they spotted the missing child on the creek banks near the Butte Creek Mill. Once on scene, the deputy confirmed it was the missing child and immediately began CPR efforts.
A rescue boat quickly arrived and took the young child to an awaiting Mercy Flights ambulance, while crews continued CPR efforts. The Mercy unit was then rushed to a nearby Medford medical center. CPR efforts had been ongoing for approximately 11 minutes at the time Mercy loaded the young victim into the ambulance for transfer.
