Last night at 1:13 a.m., Jackson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) deputies attempted to stop a white and red street bike for speeding and reckless driving near South Pacific Highway and Lowry Lane.

The motorcycle eluded, eventually entering Interstate 5 southbound towards California. JCSO deputies pursued the motorcycle across the state line where California Highway Patrol (CHP) took over pursuit. The Motorcycle exited after the agricultural checkpoint and headed back northbound. Once back in Oregon, JCSO took over the pursuit.
The motorcycle malfunctioned near I-5 mile marker 22 and the driver fled on foot into a nearby orchard. JCSO K-9 Remco tracked the suspect into a nearby swamp and apprehended him.
The suspect, Preston Whaley, 30, was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries and lodged in the Jackson County Jail on charges of Elude, felony driving while suspended, reckless driving, and a felony DUII.
JCSO was assisted by Phoenix, Talent, and Ashland Police departments, and CHP.
K-9 Remco is an 8 ½ year old Belgian Malinois and was imported from the Netherlands. He has been teamed up with his handler Corporal Hohl since 2014.
