JCSO Reminds Motorists About ‘Move Over Law’ After Deputy Injured

Crash Responder Safety Week and the Move Over campaign hits home after JCSO deputy injured while responding to a motor vehicle accident.

Last week at a motor vehicle crash on Table Rock Road in Central Point, a suspected impaired driver slammed into a parked JCSO patrol car while a deputy was inside. The deputy and driver both sustained minor injuries and were transported to a local hospital. We can report both are ok.

Please #MoveOver and slow down when you see emergency lights.

Oregon’s Move Over Law (ORS 811.147) states that if you are approaching any type of emergency vehicle, tow truck or roadside assistance vehicle which is stopped on the roadside with emergency lights activated, you must:

• MOVE OVER into another available lane.
• If you can’t safely change lanes, SLOW DOWN to a speed that is at least 5 mph below the posted or designated speed of the roadway.
• In all cases, the driver must try to provide as much room as possible for the emergency vehicle, tow truck or roadside assistance vehicle.
Failure to obey this law can cost drivers up to $525.
