On Sunday, at 10:30a, Medford Fire (MFD) crews responded to a report of smoke from an attic at a residence on 909 King St. Crews found light smoke from the eaves on arrival and identified a strong heat source in the attic above a rear bedroom.
Fire investigators determined the fire was caused by an overload or failure of a electrical cable running across joists in the attic. There were numerous loads on this circuit, including a heavy duty space heater.
Thanks to fire personnel’s efforts, the overall damage to the structure is minimal. Unfortunately, due to the damage to electrical system, the house was determined to be unfit to occupy until repairs can be made.
There were no reported injuries from the fire. The residence had a functioning smoke alarm present, but it did not activate due to the smoke being contained to the attic space only.
The Red Cross also responded to this incident and will be providing assistance to the three occupants and their pets until other arrangements are made.
