On May 15th, the sun, moon and Earth will align Sunday night for a total lunar eclipse. This event occurs when the Earth moves into place between the sun and the full moon. As a result, the Earth casts a giant shadow across the lunar surface, giving the moon a striking reddish hue — which is why lunar eclipses are also referred to as blood moons. The next expected chance to witness a similar event is November 8th, 2022.
Currently, the National Weather Service office in Medford has good news for those wanting to catch a glimpse of the phenomenon. The weather forecast calls for mostly clear skies for much of the evening on Sunday. There are isolated clouds possible, however.
